- Abstract
In the present work a study of the synthesis process of a ceramic composite SiC-Al2O3-CaAl4O7, using glass-Al-C system as raw materials, by the SHS-EA process (Self-Sustained High-Temperature Synthesis combined with an electric arc).An electric arc oven was used under argon atmosphere, to reduce the SiO2existent in the glass with aluminum. The combination of the energy from the exothermic reaction of alumina with the electric arc allowed the threshold of the thermal energy to be overcome kinetics borders associate with formation reaction of composite. On the basis of the stoichiometric relations of the raw materials, in powder, to be pressed in pellets, the synthesis was performed reaching temperatures over 2500K, forming the composite SiC-Al2O3-CaAl4O7. The samples obtained were analyzed by XRD and MEB-EDX confirming the simultaneous production of αSiC-αAl2O3-CaAl4O7.
