- Abstract
The disease induced by monkeypox virus was diagnosed for the first time in humans in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo where monkeypox is considered an endemic disease. The mortality rate due to monkeypox has been reported as 1%-10% in Africa.2 A recent systemic review found that monkeypox cases have increased 10-fold since 1970 in Africa and sporadic outbreaks outside Africa have been reported from 2003 to 2021. While the COVID pandemic is still raging in some parts of the world, a global outbreak of monkeypox appeared as an additional public health threat.
