- Title
Are Double-blind Controlled Trials Always Necessary?
- Authors
Nunn, C. M. H.
- Abstract
The article comments on the necessity of double-blind controlled drug trials in psychiatry. The author, who is a psychiatrist, argues that criticisms of double blind trials are often made. Double-blind trials are in fact often not double-blind because raters and experienced patients can tell the difference between the side effects produced by the different treatments. This is a consideration relevant to the trials of psychotropics. Double blind methodology actually provides some sort of check on bias and carelessness on the part of investigators.
