- Abstract
This editorial discusses the use of four-dimensional flow magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) in assessing complex flow patterns in patients with carotid webs, carotid atherosclerosis, and healthy subjects. The article highlights the limitations of traditional lumen imaging and emphasizes the importance of considering flow dynamics and vessel wall characteristics in determining the clinical significance of vascular lesions. The study by El Sayed et al. found that patients with carotid webs, despite having a lower degree of stenosis, exhibited stagnant flow patterns associated with increased embolic risk. The editorial suggests that MRA, with its ability to visualize flow disturbances and assess both lumen geometry and vessel wall characteristics, may provide a more comprehensive understanding of patient risk and outcomes.
