Wang et al. discovered that Pigment-Defective Mutant4 (PDM4), a chloroplast P-type PPR protein, plays a crucial role in the expression of chloroplast genes and the development of chloroplasts in Arabidopsis. Chloroplast stromal chaperone proteins (e.g., HSP90C, HSP70s, and HSP40s) and the GrpE-type nucleotide exchange factors have been proposed to participate in chloroplast protein import, thylakoid integration, assembly and disassembly.
