- Abstract
The practice of polygamy has a major impact on the institution of the household, especially in terms of the functionality and stability of family members to survive a polygamous life. Thus, this study was conducted to identify the functionality of polygamous families in terms of community acceptance and social relations to the practice of polygamy. This study uses a qualitative approach with in-depth interview method. Research instruments such as interview question guides, voice recording tapes, notebooks and researchers as instruments were used in this study. Purposeful sampling was used and a total of six families were interviewed with 21 respondents consisting of six husbands, five first wives, five second wives, third and fourth wives, as well as three children. The results of the interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. The study revealed that there are six forms of social acceptance and social relations experienced by members of the polygamous family, namely, from the perspective of the husband, society is positive and negative, and receives stigma from society, while, for the point of view of wives, society gives compassion and received a lot of negative incitement. Meanwhile, from the point of view of children, the stigmatization of friends around them is negative and positive. These results can give an image of the reality of society's acceptance of polygamous life. Various initiatives need to be undertaken to develop the character of the community towards the institution of the polygamous family in order to further improve the well-being of the positive psychological functioning in the institution of the polygamous family.
