Why Early Reflection Matters In Education Programs: Lessons in Personal Growth and Pedagogy.

- Abstract
Students are capable of thoughtful reflection when afforded the opportunity, but such reflection may not occur until they are student teaching or in graduate course work. This paper examines an exercise that invites introductory education students to reflect on their learning and make recommendations to future students. In doing so, students gain confidence in a low-stakes environment, develop their teaching voice, and have the opportunity to put course theory into practice. Such reflection demands increased effort from instructors who serve as writing mentors, and those efforts allow experienced teachers, in turn, to reflect on their own pedagogy. The results illustrate students are eager to discuss educational principles, can provide metaphorical analysis, and can discuss the pace of instruction and contingencies that educators face daily in the classroom.
