- Abstract
The article focuses on a study that investigated the association between admission to stroke centers for acute ischemic stroke and mortality. Using data from the New York Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System, the researchers compared mortality for patients admitted with ischemic stroke between 2005 and 2006 at designated stroke centers and at nondesignated hospitals, using differential distance to hospitals as a variable in adjusting for potential pre-hospital selection bias. Results indicated modestly lower mortality among patients with acute ischemic stroke admitted to a designated stroke center, as well as more frequent use of thrombolytic therapy.
