- Abstract
The article discusses a study which investigated the impact of routine intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation before high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) on major adverse cardiac and cardiovascular events (MACCE). The randomized controlled trial was conducted in several tertiary referral cardiac centers in Great Britain between December 2005 and January 2009. Patients suffering from severe left ventricular dysfunction and extensive coronary disease were involved. It was found that elective intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) failed to reduce MACCE following PCI.
