- Abstract
The article discusses the variability in toxicity of the Eastern Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens). Topics include the unken reflex exhibited by newts as a defense mechanism against predators, the presence of tetrodotoxin (TTX) in their skin and its effects on nerve and muscle function, and the significant variability in toxin levels among different populations, with some Florida specimens being nontoxic.
