- Abstract
Isotretinoin is a vitamin A derivative; it was approved for treatment of cystic and cicatrizial acne, long time ago. Its usefulness in those conditions has been fully demonstrated. Unfortunately new and dubious indications have emerged, i.e. seborrhea control and photo damage. One of the adverse effects is the teratogenicity. This paper reports a case of retinoid embryopathy in an acne patient who was given isotretinoin. Its use was justified and full information about the risks was given. It is worrisome to expect more cases of isotretinoin embryopathy in the future since its prescription has been extended for trivial conditions.
