- Abstract
In a past issue of the journal, Schroeder et al1 discuss the experience and prospects of hepatitis C in different countries; Colombia, however, was left out. During the period between August 2017 and December 2018, 1145 patients with chronic hepatitis C were registered, with 172 incident cases and 240 patients with a history of previous therapy. Interestingly, of the 592 male patients identified with hepatitis C, 271 (46%) of them had HIV; 658 patients had been successfully followed until they completed treatment with direct-acting antivirals, with a sustained viral response in 632 patients (96%); of the 26 cases (4%) that did not, 10 had genotype 4, and 8 genotype 1B.4 We believe this is a successful model both for the savings generated for the health system as well as for the presumably better clinical outcomes of patients due to their close monitoring.
