- Abstract
The article discusses studies on brown adipose tissue. Brown adipose tissue burns fat instead of storing it like white adipose tissue. Konrad Gessner described brown adipose tissue as being neither fat or muscle in 1551. New studies are showing that brown fat cells not only differ from white fat cells in function, but as well as in origin. Examination of the gene Myf5 revealed that both muscle and brown fat cells originate from precursor muscle cells. It was also found that there are brown fat-like cells which behave differently from other brown fat cells more closely related to muscle. The article provides an overview of studies on brown adipose tissue.
