- Abstract
Pancreatitis and its various complicated forms are relatively common clinical findings in daily practice. Their importance is underlined by their effect on therapy and clinical outcome. In this summary we clarify the terminology with clinical examples through different modalities and demonstrate the clinical significance and imaging pitfalls of complicated forms. We discuss three clinical scenarios with typical imaging findings. Central gland necrosis, as a result of acute pancreatitis represents full thickness mid-glandular necrosis, which is nearly always associated with disruption of the pancreatic duct. This can lead to disconnected pancreatic duct syndrome with further complications. Walled-off necrosis is an encapsulated, heterogeneous, non-liquefied material that is a late complication of acute pancreatitis. Chronic paraduodenal pancreatitis affects the groove between the head of the pancreas and the duodenum, often mimicking neoplasms. Case reports will illustrate the typical appearance of these complicated forms, which helps to make a prompt and precise diagnosis, leading to optimal patient outcome.
