- Abstract
Fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites are an important advancement in materials for applications that require enhanced performance capabilities in aggressive, high temperature environments. Silicon carbide-based systems provide needed material properties for these uses. Silicon carbide fibers fabricated by laser-driven chemical vapor deposition are a high purity reinforcement phase that can enable such composite behavior. Ceramic composite components using these fibers in a non-woven format were fabricated and evaluated in both test coupons sectioned from bulk panels and as a joint structure to weld ceramic tubes together. Processing steps and results are presented in this paper.
