- Abstract
In the field of the application of molecular techniques the progress achieved has enabled yet more precise methods for the estimation of breeding values within the framework of genomic selection. Furthermore, these techniques also allow for improvements when searching for functional genes and their variants. The progress in molecular techniques can fully be exploited if precision on the genomic scale is matched by precision in phenotyping. New technologies also account for the feasibility of recording in trait complexes which up to now could not fully be exploited such that accurate recordings are possible. Examples for this are the trait complexes feed efficiency and health. Test herds in the form of contracted herds of the breeding organization and supplying various data provide an ideal environment for data collection within dairy cattle breeding programs. From own work based on test herd data from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Brandenburg, a number of examples are presented.
