- Title
A STUDY OF VACUOLARIA VIRESCENS CIENKOWSKI.
- Authors
Spencer, Lorraine B.
- Abstract
Good collections of Vacuolaria virescens Cienkowski made from a pond in Forsyth County, North Carolina, marks the first recorded appearance of large numbers of this rare genus in the United States. The abundance of this material permitted a careful study of the gross morphology, nuclear structure, organelles, reproduction, and cyst formation, as well as of the ecology of the flagellates. Definitive descriptions of Vacuolaria virescens and V. viridis (Dang.) Senn by European authors are inconsistent and contradictory. Characteristics earlier attributed to each of these species have been found in the American taxon. Indications are that the taxa described belong to the same species, V. virescens.
