- Abstract
Introduction. The Living Will Law in Mexico City (LVADF) regulates the will of people, diagnosed with terminal diseases, to not submit them to treatments considered as therapeutic obstinacy, establishing then specialized care that ensure respect for their dignity and provide quality of life in the course of death. Material and methods. Through a descriptive, qualitative and cross-sectional study, nurses knowledge on the LVADF was identified. The sample was taken from nurses of two general hospitals of Mexico City's Ministry of Health, to whom a questionnaire was applied based on the LVADF, regarding the use of orthothanasia, therapeutic obstinacy, euthanasia and palliative care. Results. The study showed that 46% of the nursing staff considered correct the application of therapeutic obstinacy, 100% knows about the use of palliative care, while 75% considers the use of thanatology and minimum ordinary measures appropriate. 78% of the survey expressed that euthanasia is not an adequate alternative for care of terminal patients. Conclussions. Nurse personnel has some knowledge about the conditions and dispositions of the LVADF such as the use of palliative care, thanatology, minimum ordinary measures and the proscription of euthanasia, however, they lack knowledge on the particularities of the law, as they cannot identify when provided care may be disproportionate.
