Improving Cause-of-Death Statistics: The Case of Fetal Deaths.
- Authors
Atkinson, Delton
- Abstract
The article discusses the importance of a vital statistics system in reporting fetal deaths. The system has been a valuable and essential public health resource and has influenced the direction of many health initiatives. The need for timely vital statistics of high quality is even more pronounced with the advent of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Healthy People 2000 objectives. Reports of fetal death should be viewed as a source of information for monitoring the health of mothers and infants during the perinatal period as a component of the vital statistics system.
