- Authors
Brewer, Holly
- Abstract
The article focuses on author Alexis de Tocqueville's historical analysis of the struggle between democracy and aristocracy in early U.S. For him, religion was the most important factor that led to democracy in Puritan New England. It presents his explanation for the connection between Puritanism and Republicanism or between Puritanism and Enlightenment. It cites the criticism of Tocqueville's observations about equality by some scholars.
