- Abstract
Melancholy is a feeling that has accompanied the human being since ancient times. Various authors have tried to understand it from a theological, philosophical and psychological perspective; melancholy is associated with sadness, but is best understood as a "bittersweet" feeling, a mixture of happiness and sadness. A review of a historical document of a colonial prescription was carried out where its components were reviewed one by one by means of a review of the literature in electronic databases. At present it has taken great preponderance due to the increase in symptoms associated with sadness and depression. We have found certain effects that could affect the pathophysiology of melancholy found in the components of the prescription. It is interesting and constructive to review the medical management of melancholy, based on medicinal plants, which were known to improve the mood and quality of life of those who suffered from these symptoms during the colonial period in New Granada.
