- Abstract
A study has shown that switching from vitamin K antagonists to non-vitamin K antagonists increases the risk of bleeding in frail patients with atrial fibrillation. The study included 1330 patients, of whom 662 switched from vitamin K antagonists to DOACs. After observing 163 primary outcomes, the study was terminated because the bleeding risk in the DOAC group was nearly 70% higher than in the VKA group. However, no significant differences were found in terms of thromboembolic events and mortality between the two groups. Therefore, the authors of the study advise against switching to non-vitamin K antagonists in these patients.
