- Abstract
This article provides a concise overview of the fundamentals of vasopressor administration, focusing on the use of norepinephrine as an example. Norepinephrine is a commonly used vasopressor in intensive care units and operating rooms worldwide. The article discusses the pharmacological properties of norepinephrine, including its metabolism and effects on alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors. It also highlights the variability in the pharmacodynamic response of norepinephrine, which can be influenced by factors such as illness severity. The article addresses current dosing strategies for norepinephrine and the need for consensus and homogenization in practice. It also discusses the importance of individualizing mean arterial pressure (MAP) targets and the use of norepinephrine dose as a proxy for clinical severity. The article concludes by highlighting areas of uncertainty and the need for further research to improve the use of norepinephrine in clinical practice.
