- Abstract
The 2023 AABB international guidelines for red blood cell transfusions have been published in JAMA. These guidelines are based on the best available evidence from clinical trials and were developed using a systematic approach with support from international organizations. They provide recommendations for transfusion practices for both adults and pediatric patients. The key recommendation for adults is to adopt a restrictive transfusion strategy when the hemoglobin concentration is less than 7 g/dL for stable patients. For pediatric patients, a restrictive strategy is recommended for critically ill children and those at risk of critical illness, with a hemoglobin threshold of less than 7 g/dL. The document highlights the need for further research and the importance of implementing these guidelines in clinical practice.
