- Abstract
The article focuses on the reduction of the rate of urinary tract infections (UTIs) among surgical patients as a result of the administration of a prophylactic antibiotic when the patient's urinary catheter is removed. It discusses an example that illustrates how an antibiotic is given to a patient who was admitted to the hospital for resection of a vertebral mass as well as the summary of several studies on the effectiveness of prophylactic use of antibiotics in reducing the risk of UTIs.
