- Abstract
The article reports that the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron XBB.1.5 variant was first detected in New York City (NYC) as of January 7, 2023, and was the predominant variant in NYC. Topics include XBB.1.5 infections tended to be younger, racial and ethnic minorities, and residents of high-poverty neighborhoods; and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is positioned to characterize subvariant and evidence of a difference in disease severity between XBB.1.5 and other variant.
