- Authors
Brown, Lawrence D.; Kraft, M. Katherine
- Abstract
The article refers to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which introduced Active Living Research programs, and discusses active living initiatives in the United States. Five projects involving change in the built environment include: bike paths in Arlington, Virginia; the Boston Schoolyard Initiative in Massachusetts; Celebrate Fitness sites in Greendale, Wisconsin; and brownfield conversions in Minnesota. The economic returns on land use, promotion of public health, and state efforts to develop a policy for community growth are mentioned, as well as the social, economic, and political aspects of successful planning. Five conditions for successful initiatives include strong political support for a project and public-private sector cooperation.
