- Title
Lowering the Sultan's Flag: Sovereignty and Decolonization in Coastal Kenya.
- Authors
BRENNAN, JAMES R.
- Abstract
The article explores the shifts in political sovereignty and decolonization in coastal Kenya, where the red flag of the Sultan of Zanzibar was raised in 1953-1963. It focuses on framing mwambao, a movement in coastal Kenya, as an extended struggle over the meaning of sovereignty and talks about efforts to secure coastal autonomy in order to express a language of political legitimacy. The development of this movement and its emphasis on political attachments to Indian Ocean society and Islamic law are discussed.
