- Abstract
Objectives: Describe the distribution and frequency of disorders in the functional abilities of children and adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP). Propose interventions that contribute to improve their quality of life. Material and methods: Cross-sectional study of 1,976 Mexican patients treated in a specialized institution, evaluated by a multidisciplinary team with the "abilities index" at the beginning of each academic cycle, for 8 consecutive years. Results: 86% had motor disorders, 79% socio-adaptive and 42% those related to physical health. Functional profile showed the presence of multiple disorders and high ratings (range 3-5) indicating a great limitation in 6 of the skills. Only in the audition area, in which an increase was 32% in the seventh year X2 = 20.7 p < 0.05, was observed a significant change in the frequency of functional disorders over time. Conclusions: In the population of patients with CP, disorders in the socioadaptive skills are almost as common as motor disorders. The functional profile of the group showed multiple disorders being moderate to deep in 6 of 9 studied skills. It is desirable that care for this population programmes provide a comprehensive approach, including disorders of functional skills and not only their motor problems, thus enriching the lives of children and adolescents with CP and their families.
