- Abstract
Objective. To identify the associated factors to primary vs secondary malnutrition in hospitalized children of 6-60 months of age hospitalized in the Civil Hospital of Guadalajara. Methods. In a cross sectional design, 166 children (< 60 months of age) with primary and/or secondary malnutrition were included. The association between deficit in anthropometric indices weight/age, height/age and weight/height (Z score) and socioeconomic, demographic, pathological and feeding variables were analyzed with ANOVA, chi square test and OR (95% CI). Results. In the whole population, mild and moderate malnutrition occurred in 70.6% and 29.4%, respectively. Risk factors associated to primary malnutrition were: Less educated (RM 5.76 [I.34, 28.3] p = 0.014) and single mothers (RM 2.25 [I.01, 5.03], p = 0.029); father's alcoholism (RM 3.47 [I.09, 11.4] p = 0.018); young parents (RM 2.60 [I.03, 6.60] p = 0.025) and soil floor of households (RM 3.67 [I.05, 14.0], p = 0.02). Other associated factors to primary malnutrition were: lower birth weight (p = 0.002); high number of family members (p = 0.04); low father's income (p = 0.02) and early introduction of clears soups and vegetables (p = 0.027). Discussion. There are some risk and protection factors that are associated to primary malnutrition in children hospitalized in a public hospital that differ of those observed in children with secondary malnutrition.
