- Abstract
Market requirements for the quality of airport terminals have increased in recent years due to the increasingly prosperous trend of globalization. Improving the waiting environment, attaching importance to business planning, and increasing non-aviation revenue have become more and more important in airport planning and design. As an important part of non-aviation revenue, the commercial area in terminals is trending towards an "atypical" model. Different from typical commercial complexes, the commercial area planning of the terminal building has three characteristics: subordination, directionality, and purpose. These three characteristics may be associated with problems in the planning and design stages, thus influencing the non-aviation revenue of the terminal. It is impossible to compare the pros and cons of the unimplemented plan through actual revenue. Are there any other evaluation methods in addition to empirical judgment? Based on the space syntax theory, previous studies concerning terminal buildings of airports have mainly focused on the spatial layout of buildings, and research on business analysis has mainly concentrated on urban commercial complexes. Few studies have focused on space evaluation in the commercial areas of terminal buildings based on the space syntax theory. Therefore, whether the space of the commercial area of the terminal building is objectively good or bad has important guiding significance for the design and reconstruction of commercial areas within airports. Space syntax theory is a method for quantitative analysis of the spatial form and its correlates from a mathematical perspective. The design schemes of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport before and after optimization based on the "atypical commercial complex" design strategy were chosen as research objects. The commercial area before and after the design optimization was analyzed, and space syntax topology analysis was conducted using the Depth map software, generating correlation results. The analysis results were extracted and compared one by one. The effectiveness of the proposed design optimization strategy in improving characteristics of the terminal commercial area was verified objectively from the perspectives of visibility, accessibility, and cognition. According to a summary of the comparative results, the following conclusions can drawn: 1) the curved dynamic line with evenly distributed shops on both sides and continuous retraction can improve the visibility of commercial space; 2) increasing the density of shops, enlarging the entrance of the commercial area, and expanding the turning radius of the dynamic line can improve accessibility of commercial space; 3) the combined setting of passenger flow and the commercial dynamic line can improve the cognition of commercial space; 4) a simple spatial interface can improve the understandability of commercial space, but should be decided upon with comprehensive considerations for space effects and business atmosphere; 5) space syntax not only has important guiding significance for architectural design and commercial planning in pre-design and post-design comparison and decision-making, but can also provide a theoretical basis for the space form design of hub terminal commercial areas in future.
