- Abstract
The article presents a historical overview for understanding the historical experience and development of the Jewish communities of Latin America since the time of Italian navigator and explorer Christopher Columbus up to the present. It discusses the social factors, political and economic changes in Latin American and global communities that facilitated Jewish immigration. The elements necessary for a sustainable Jewish community as well as the strengths, challenges and opportunities facing many Jewish communities living in contemporary Latin America and the Caribbean are identified. It also provides a background of the economic, social and political histories of Latino Jewish social workers and families in several Latin American countries such as Argentina, Brazil and Chile.
