- Title
Is allergic disease programmed in early life?
- Authors

- Abstract
This article reports that allergic disease is programmed in early life. Immunology also provides many examples of biological programming, and it would not be surprising to find evidence that immune function in general, and allergic sensitization in particular, were influenced by events occurring early in life. When the relationship between early infection and allergy was reviewed 5 years ago, it was suggested that viral infections in infancy may promote or accelerate the development of allergic sensitization. Although these observations were mainly based on parental reports of hay fever and eczema, they are consistent with a recent report from Germany of an inverse relationship between sibship size and the prevalence of one or more positive skin-prick tests to common aeroallergens.
