- Abstract
Introduction. Conventional voice rehabilitation after laryngectomy is unacceptable to many patients because of a low quality of voice and long and arduous procedure. The perspectives for post-laryngectomy rehabilitation have been greatly enhanced by the development of tracheolaryngeal voice prostheses. Aim. Assess results of voice rehabilitation in patents after total laryngectomy with tracheolaryngeal voice prostheses using a modified Harrison and Robillard-Shultz (HRS) scale. Material and methods. Results of the rehabilitation were assessed in 11 patients after total laryngectomy provided with tracheolaryngeal voice prostheses. Three aspects of post-surgery rehabilitation, i.e. the use of the tracheoeosophageal speech, quality of voice, as well as patient's capability to maintain the prosthesis and his ability to recognize and manage common problems with its use were assessed in the HRS scale. Most common causes for the protraction of the rehabilitation were identified and the quality of life was assessed by the HRS scale. Results. Five of the 11 patients received the maximum score of 13 in the HRS scale. The majority of the patients were able to communicate by fluent and understandable speech. Seven patients experienced rehabilitation problems of psychogenic origin. Quality of life in the implanted and conventionally treated patients assessed by the Mini-MAC scale was similar. Conclusions. Results of the voice rehabilitation in patients after total laryngectomy provided with tracheolaryngeal voice prostheses were very good. The HRS scale enabled standardization of the assessment of the voice rehabilitation process.
