- Abstract
Objective: The concept of "illness perception" which has gained importance in the recent years is an important concept especially for cancer patients in order to provide appropriate psychiatric and psychological treatment. The aim of this study is to obtain reliability and validity data of "The Illness Perception Questionnaire-Revised (IPQ-R)" in cancer patients in Turkish culture. Method: The Turkish version of the Illness Perception Questionnaire was applied to 203 cancer patients in Istanbul University, Istanbul Medicine Faculty, Ontology Institute. For the test-retest reliability the scale had been applied to 80 patients after 3 weeks. The semi-structured interview form, IPQ-R and Beck Depression Inventory for criterion validity values were applied to the patients. Results: IPO-R has three sections, illness identity, attributions consenting the disease and causes. The internal validity coefficients of these sections were .84, .60-.85, .41 -.78 respectively. Item-total statistics were significant. Illness perception section was found to have 7 factors and causes section had 5 factors and item loads (.31-.84 and .42-.87) were satisfactory. Conclusion: The analyses showed that the Turkish adaptation of IPQ-R has satisfactory reliability and validity coefficients in cancer patients and therefore is a valid measurement tool. With the contribution of this scale it is believed that the understanding and conceptualization of the cancer experience in Turkish culture will increase.
