- Abstract
Lay Summary: The genetic components (DNA) of human papillomavirus–related throat cancer (in the oropharynx) might be measured after surgery to help to predict whether treatment has been successful. Circulating tumor human papillomavirus DNA (ctHPVDNA) shows promise as a biomarker for surveillance after the primary treatment of oropharyngeal carcinoma with transoral robotic surgery according to the results of digital droplet polymerase chain reaction, which was used to detect ctHPVDNA in 34 patients before and after surgery. This pilot study suggests that levels of ctHPVDNA on postoperative day 1 are significantly associated with pathologic risk for residual disease and are an indication for adjuvant therapy.
