- Abstract
The article presents information on the variation in resistance to infection or disease with parasitic protozoa and helminths. Strains of mice vary in the duration of primary infection initiated by oral administration of cysts of the natural mouse parasite, Giardia muris. C3H/He mice, and males in particular, harbour intraluminal trophozoites and excrete faecal cysts of this protozoan parasite for prolonged periods. In contrast, infection in BALB/c mice is apparently terminated by 6-8 weeks although hypothymic BALB/c.nu/nu mice develop chronic infection.
