- Abstract
The article discusses research investigating how dried distillers’ grain with solubles (DDGS), derived from wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), impact the excretion of nutrients and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) in feedlot cattle (Bos taurus). The team conducted an experiment using a control group of feedlot heifers that were fed no DDGS-based diets and case groups that were fed incremental amounts of DDGS-based diets. The feces and manure were sampled monthly over a period of 133-days and analyzed for total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and hydrogen-ion concentration. DDGS-based diets contained higher amounts of VFAs that the control group with VFAs being most odorous in manure. The use of wheat DDGS in crop production and its contribution to N and P loading is discussed.
