- Abstract
PK-386, a high yielding, early maturing, long-grain and non-aromatic rice variety was evolved by hybridizing two lines (4439 and 1053-1-2) at Rice Research institute, Kala Shah Kaku, Sheikhupur, Pakistan. The variety was tested in varietal yield trials from 1992 to 2012. The variety gave higher paddy yield (4.35 t/ha) than Basmati-385 and Super Basmati on average basis. It showed one week early maturity (103 days) than Basmati-385 (108 days) and two week early maturity than Super Basmati-515 (112 days). It was found resistant to lodging due to its short stature and stiffed stem. It also showed resistance to blast diseases and bakanae/ foot rot. Super Basmati and Basmati- 385 are highly susceptible to bacterial leaf blight (Xanthomonas oryzae pv. Oryzae), whereas PK-386 is moderately susceptible to this disease. Physicochemical tests revealed that the grain appearance and quality index (2.44) of this cultivar is close to Basmati-385 (2.49) but better than Super Basmati (2.38). Average grain length, breadth and thickness were found about 6.85, 1.72 and 1.60 mm respectively, while boiled kernel length is 13 mm with 1.89 elongation ratio.
