- Abstract
Congenital Tracheo-esophageal fistula is an abnormal communication between the trachea and the esophagus with or without esophageal atresia. The reported incidence of trachea-esophageal fistula is 1 in every 2000-4000 births. It is frequently associated with other congenital anomalies of the heart, lung, kidney, gastrointestinal tract and as part of VATER association (V: Vertebral; A: Anal; TE: Tracheo-Esophageal; R: Renal) or the VACTERL association (VATER + C: Cardiac; and L: Limb). Our patient was a preterm, low birth weight neonate with multiple congenital malformations like hypoplasia of the right lung and right pulmonary artery, dextroposition of the heart, patent ductus arteriosus and atrial septal defect. Interestingly, despite a normally draining right pulmonary vein, his chest X-ray showed "Scimitar sign". On extensive Medline search, we could not find any reports of anaesthetic management of such patients coming for primary corrective surgery.
