- Title
THE IVORY HORN IN THE WALTERS ART MUSEUM.
- Authors
KINGSLEY, JENNIFER
- Abstract
This article discusses the decorative ivory horn located at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. The author comments on the medieval origins of the oliphant, an horn instrument made from an elephant tusk, which was believed to have originated in southern Italy or Egypt. She describes the decoration on the ivory, which includes geometric shapes, ornamental bands, and a series of animals, all of which aid in the determination of its origin. Each of the images depicted on the oliphant are examined. Past studies on the ivory art are also analyzed.
