- Title
"Matters of Life and Death" in a Mediterranean Port City Infrastructure, Housing and Infectious Disease in Patras, 1901-1940.
- Authors
Eliopoulos, Panagiotis G.
- Abstract
The article examines the state of public health and hygiene in the city of Patras, Greece, with the author noting the connections between urbanization and the spread of disease. Various epidemics and diseases are detailed by the author, including smallpox, the plague, and Spanish Influenza, as are mortality rates in the city for the time period in question. The transmission of disease is then connected to the state of the city's infrastructure. A lack of adequate housing for the urban poor is also connected to disease transmission in Patras.
