- Abstract
Urinary tract infections are called IVU's in Mexico because of the Spanish contraction for urinary tract infections, and are an important national health problem in this and other countries, bearing a significant incidence and an important mortality rate that could be diminished by developing a suitable clinical management, because most of the deaths are due to complicated cases and a poor clinical management. Looking for solutions, a group of Mexican specialists gathered in Huatulco, Oaxaca, from the 7th through the 10th of October 2004 with the aim of carrying along the "Ist National Consensus Meeting on the Antimicrobial Management of UTI's —IVUs- in the Adult". The meeting opened a chance for discussing several aspects regarding the definition, diagnosis and treatment of these infections, focusing infections with a bacterial etiology, because they are, by far, the most common ones and reviewing the capital related topics like antimicrobial activity and bacterial resistance. This discussion forum was carried out at the light of the most internationally updated clinical criteria and guidelines, aiming to adapt them to the Mexican circumstance and specific needs, in order to impinge in a positive way on the national epidemics. This report gives us the achieved consensus concepts, criteria and therapeutic guidelines — basically on the use of antimicrobial agents — considered as the more promising & suitable ones for the medical management of "IVUs" in Mexico.
