- Abstract
A novel one-dimensional Lagrangian simulation of beam–wave interaction in helix traveling-wave tubes is introduced in this paper. Unlike the traditional transmission-line coupled-mode Lagrangian analysis, direct electromagnetic coupling of the electric field to the RF signal from the Fourier harmonic components of RF current in a modulated beam is discussed here in terms of the interaction impedance of the RF structure by considering the modulated stream of moving charges as a radiating source. The model presented is very simple and fast, as all of the expressions and equations developed are in closed form and the simulation involves only one numerical integration at each step. The results obtained using the present model show good agreement (deviation <2%) with that generated using the traditional one-dimensional transmission-line coupled-mode Lagrangian analysis of Rowe. The theory presented is general, and can be used directly for the analysis of harmonic generation as well as multisignal operation in helix traveling-wave tubes. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
