- Abstract
The study analyzes the inconsistencies and contradictions of the Hungarian genetic soil classification system, which has been criticized in many ways. The intention of this analysis is preserving the main features of the system: the names and contents of the soil taxa and initiating a professional dialogue about the possibility of correcting the errors and renewing the system. We have pointed out the hybrid nature of the classification system, which is genetic in name and its concept, hierarchical in its structure: that the main genetic aspect is fully valid only at the aggregation level of the main types, while diagnostic aspects form the basis of separation in about one-third of the soil types. At lower hierarchical levels (subtypes, variants), the classification is almost purely diagnostic. We have sorted into a list those problematic type, subtype and variant names that occur at several hierarchical levels with the same name and possibly different content, or that appear at the same hierarchical level but with different definitions, or can even be considered synonymous, due to the same content underlying the different names. The intention of the discussion article is to correct the identified errors and inconsistencies after generating extensive professional consultation.
