- Abstract
The article reports on the substantial gender imbalance created by the decades-old one-child policy in China. Topics covered include the wider social and political changes needed to resolve the demographic crisis such as tougher legal restrictions on sex-selective neonatal practices and a wider education campaign. Also mentioned are the widespread preference for male children as well as the cultural and economic factors behind the gender gap.
