- Abstract
London plane is a tree that is more and more often used for urban decoration. One of the main causes for doing so is a high resistance against air pollution, as well as high permeability of light of the leaves. However, the plant is susceptible to infections caused by many fungal species - including Phomopsis scabra which causes stems canker and can lead to dying of whole trees. The aim of this study was to determine the level of infection of the London plane by this pathogen in 4 locations in Wrocław. Phomopsis scabra was found to be a certain threat for London plane trees in the area of the city square. The most often occurring symptoms on the infected trees were stem canker, which begins mostly in wounds. Few trees were dying. The worsening of trees health status in the area of the city square were probably correlated with the young age of the trees (7 to 10 years old), as well as their heightened susceptibility to diseases. Too tamped ground and too low water availability also had a negative effect on the growing trees. In unfavourable environmental conditions for the pathogen (warm temperature, low amount of precipitation) the fungus can present endophytic capabilities and inhabit the inner tissue of the trees, which can result in a heightened intensity of the disease and its symptoms over time.
