- Title
ALCIBIADES AT THE OLYMPICS: PERFORMANCE, POLITICS AND CIVIC IDEOLOGY.
- Authors
GRIBBLE, DAVID
- Abstract
The article explores the political dimensions of the Olympic Games in Greece in 416 BC, focusing on Greek politician Alcibiades' role in the games and its impact on the politics of the Peloponnesian War. The author looks at the Olympics as a pan-Hellenic Greek festival in which participants could contest and display their aristocratic political power. Topics include Alcibiades' pursuit of prestige, in particular prestige acquired in horse-racing, or "hippotrophia," and politician Nicias.
