- Abstract
Introduction: Patients with post-covid-19 syndrome, which is defined as signs and symptoms arising from the disease that remain even after 12 weeks of infection, often present reduced exercise tolerance and peripheral muscle dysfunction which culminates in loss of functional capacity. Nowadays, pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is an important strategy for the management of these patients, as it is an intervention that aims to improve physical and functional capacity and recovery of respiratory function. Objective: To evaluate the effect of PR in patients with post-covid-19 syndrome. Methods: We performed a case series study with 13 patients that participated in a 8-week (2 sessions per week, 60 minutes per day) outpatient comprehensive PR program in specialized rehabilitation center from march to july 2022. The 30 second chair stand test (30CST) and time up and go test (TUG) were evaluated before and after 8 weeks of PR. The intervention protocol was composed of aerobic physical training, peripheral and respiratory muscle strength training. Results: After 8 weeks of PR there was a significant improvement in functional capacity, with an increase of numbers of repetitions in 30CST (p = 0.001) and time duration of TUG test (p = 0.04). Conclusion: PR improves functional capacity in patients with post-covid-19 syndrome.
