- Abstract
Stadsgeschiedenis was ook in 2017 een ijverig beoefende discipline. Al valt opnieuw op dat het om een discipline zonder duidelijk overkoepelend theoretisch paradigma of gedeelde onderzoeksagenda gaat.1 Stadsgeschiedenis is als een personage op zoek naar een scheppend auteur, om de vergelijking met het surrealistisch meesterwerk van de Italiaanse schrijver Luigi Pirandello op te roepen: alles is aanwezig, met uitzondering van een gedeeld project om coherentie, bezieling en sturing te geven.2 Wat overblijft zijn fragmenten van een discipline, doorgangen naar, insteken van: een stadsgeschiedenis in meervoud. Stadsgeschiedenis duikt op in vaktijdschriften die zich als dusdanig disciplinair erkennen, zoals Urban History, Journal of Urban History, Histoire Urbaine, Citta e Storia, enzovoorts, maar evenveel bijdragen over de 'stad' en het 'stedelijke' zijn terug te vinden in internationale tijdschriften die een andere disciplinaire focus doen vermoeden, zoals Social History, Economic History Review, Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, en zo verder. Dit maakt de taak van de samenstellers van deze review er dan ook niet makkelijk op. Een exhaustieve behandeling nastreven - zelfs in collectief verband - is voor een breed lezend en onderzoekend stadshistoricus even onhaalbaar en onvruchtbaar als de arbeid van Sisyphus.
